Hey guys, hope all is well!

Had a fun chat this week with Saturday Night Live DP, Alex Buono, who’s currently on an amazing tour around the U.S. with a workshop he created called The Art of Visual Storytelling!

Alex is very accomplished, both in filmmaking and cinematography (he was nominated for an Oscar for his short film, Johnny Flynton, and his feature length film, Green Street Hooligans, starring Elijah Wood, won not one, but two awards at the South By Southwest Film Festival!

In this episode we’ll hear first hand what it’s like working on this iconic show and how technology is leveling the playing field for filmmakers!

By the way, Alex uses the book The Visual Story by Bruce Block in his workshop! You can buy it at Amazon in the US, or If you’re in the UK, check it out here!

Enjoy the interview, and to comment, just hit the talk bubble (top right corner of this post!)

The term teleportation was first coined in 1931 by American writer Charles Fort and, decades later, researchers are really getting the hang of it! First, in ’98, physicists at the California Institute of Technology successfully teleported a photon (a particle of light) one meter, then, in 2004, an Australian group managed to teleport a whole stream of photons from one side of their lab to the other (a great reason to have a Fosters!), and now what have they done? Researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute of Copenhagen are teleporting information between gas atoms and gas atoms! Why is this amazing? Because that’s one step closer to transporting fully solid matter which could mean that, somewhere down the road, you won’t need that bus pass!

Professor Eugene Polzik in the quantum optics laboratory.
Photo courtesy of Niels Bohr Institute of Copenhagen.

Working in the basement of the Niels Bohr Institute, the experiment goes like this (and I’m going to try to simplify this as much as possible!):

Two glass containers each hold a cloud of gas atoms, and, get this!, the glass containers aren’t touching, but information is teleported from one cloud to the other using laser light that is calibrated to a specific wavelength. The light goes into the first container and the phenomenon known as quantum entanglement takes place whereby the light and gas are now entangled! ie they can totally communicate with each other without using an iPhone. Even when the particles are separated a connection remains! Einstein called this behavior Spooky Entanglement and it’s pretty darned cool!

Two glass containers, each holding a cloud of billions of gas atoms, are enclosed in a chamber with a magnetic field and are not connected to each other, but information is teleported from one glass cloud to the other by means of laser light.
Photo courtesy of Niels Bohr Institute of Copenhagen.

Helping things out is a magnetic field that surrounds the containers and when the laser light hits the cloud of gas, the outermost electrons of the gas atoms react just like iron filings to a magnet, by all pointing in the same direction.

But wait, there’s more! The cloud of gas emits photons (again with the light particles) containing quantum information (that info being what direction the iron filings are pointing!). The light goes back to the other container where this quantum information is then read from the light and registered by a ‘detector’ (a mighty fancy gadget I would guess. Checked in the iPhone app store, they don’t have it.) Anyway, the signal from the detector is sent back to the first container that reacts to this newly updated direction of the atoms’ electrons and adjusts itself accordingly. Teleportation, baby! I am William Shatner! Where’s my sexy space woman!? (Okay, I’m a straight woman myself so I’ll settle for a semi-human-looking space man with a full set of teeth.)

Improvements in Technique

Carrying out experiments at room temperature apparently has a downside. With gas atoms moving at 200 meters per second in the glass container they constantly bump into the sides and lose their information (kind of like happy hour, but way more important for mankind).

But don’t fret! The research group is on it!

According to Eugene Polzik, professor and head of the research center Quantop at the Niels Bohr Institute…

“We use a coating of a kind of paraffin on the interior of the glass containers and it causes the gas atoms to not lose their coding, even if they bump into the glass wall.”

So they’re slathering it with Vaseline!? Got it. I’m building one now. Screw iPhone.

All this aside, really the only thing we care about is, when can we beam ourselves up? Well, it could be a while. In Prof. Polzik’s experiment, the teleportation’s range is ½ meter. Translation: for right now it’s way more cost effective to just, well, take a step. There! You’ve transported yourself 1/2 meter and it didn’t cost you a dime and you didn’t even need Vaseline. (Although it is really useful.)

Polzik continues…

“The range of ½ meter is entirely due to the size of the laboratory.”

Excuses! But admirable for a man to admit that size does matter.

“We could increase the range if we had the space and, in principle, we could teleport information, for example, to a satellite.”

Also worth considering is that, according to the Science Museum of London, the human body contains around seven thousand trillion trillion atoms. That’s a lot of room for error. So, even though these are great inroads for the future of quantum communication, when we finally beam ourselves up, we want to make sure all the kinks are ironed out. We don’t want fingers on foreheads or any extra boobs.*

*Some may debate this.

In the meantime, you’ll have to limit your quantum communications to a phone plan with unlimited texts.

Thanks for reading, now… move along, and don’t forget to live long and prosper.

As I sit, comfortably squished between the arm of my settee and my dog to my left, bundled under a puffy blanket (the dog, not me) I feel grateful. I love being at home. It feels safe. I love having pets and feel that the home is a small microcosm of life on planet earth, with issues to deal with (the dog and the cat each hold a craving for the other’s food) and things that require tolerance (the cat snores. I might too, but they’re unable to tell me and they seem well rested so I’m not overly concerned).

I adore all my pets, but I’ll be honest I have a particular fondness for my dog. I consider owning a dog to be a great privilege, one of the greatest joys in life. I’ve heard new mothers like to smell their babies and that there is some sort of pheromone that bonds them to the baby. Whatever that is, I believe dogs have this too! I love the smell of my dog, even when it’s nearing bath time; that musty, unmistakable smell of dog is like a fine perfume to my nose. It is highly likely at this point that I too have taken on this aroma, burrowed into the fibers of some of my clothes, and you know what? I don’t even care! I’m moderately aware of my appearance (under great pressure from my mother mainly) but I wear my pet hair with pride and consider the couple of strands of fur that usually adorn my trousers to be subtle reminders that at home there is a wonderful creature awaiting my return.

I tell you this because, at the very heart of things, and not to sound cliché, but I do believe that it really is the simple things in life that bring the most reward. And perhaps this is why I was so struck this morning when I did my routine check of Twitter and discovered the events taking place in Turkey, apparently not being covered by the Turkish mainstream media.

#OccupyGezi was the trending topic that drew my eye. You never quite know with Twitter what the context is and my first thought was actually that there might be some sort of singing starlet named Gezibel and that maybe she gets around(?) I’m not making that up, that actually was my first thought. Wishful thinking? I don’t know, but I’d certainly rather be confronted by tales of a wayward teen idol than what I actually found, a tale of peaceful civilians gathered in a park in Istanbul to protest a shopping mall being built on what is apparently their last remaining green area in the city.

A park. They want to keep their park.

People walk dogs in parks. I like walking my dog.

I immediately connect to this primal, simple instinct to preserve something given to us by nature that for reasons most of us don’t quite understand make us feel good. It’s just a bunch of grass and trees right? But if you’re fortunate enough to have moments where you can fully appreciate the wonder of nature you will realize that it is something quite precious and that the preservation of a small park in a major city seems actually a fair request.

Let’s not forget that in addition to the psychological benefit of being exposed to nature there is also the economical benefit offered by the trees. According to Professor T.M. Das of the University of Calcutta, a tree living for 50 years will generate $24,500 worth of oxygen, provide $49,000 worth of air pollution control, control soil erosion and increase soil fertility to the tune of $24,500, recycle $30,000 worth of water and provide homes for animals worth $24,500*.
(*Converted to USD from Singapore Dollars noted in the report of Professor Das.)

And so it came to be that, each for their own personal reasons, on Friday, May 31st, 2013, people assembled peacefully for a sit-in at Gezi Park.

But for these individuals, their book reading and unwillingness to move from the path of bulldozers was ultimately met with a vicious attack by militant police using weapons including tear gas and water cannons that, according to online posts and photos, have already resulted in people being maimed, blinded, brain damaged, and even killed.

Yes. I said killed.

It is unconfirmed, but amidst the array of disturbing photos that can now be found online is one of a woman in a t-shirt and cut-off denim shorts whom we are told is now dead, apparently from a tear gas canister hitting her head. Another photo clearly depicts another woman standing innocently as a furious jet of water is deliberately aimed at her face. In my opinion, aiming a sharp and dangerous trajectory of water directly into someone’s face steps out of the bounds of what is necessary in terms of crowd control and falls more under the heading of a sadistic attack. Details such as these are the straw that has broken the camel’s back as now over 40,000 people are crossing Bosphorus Bridge, heading to Istanbul in support of the demonstration.

A woman is fired at with a power hose.

Police fire tear gas at a woman in the park. Uncredited photo from http://occupygezipics.tumblr.com

And here we are. Not in Turkey.

It can be easy to separate the woes of another country from those of our own, especially when a body of water lies between us and them. Our viewpoint can become just that, ‘Us and them.’ which of course is quite unhealthy. I mean, deep down, aren’t the things we all strive for the same? Safety, for ourselves and our family, and a means to provide for ourselves and our loved ones? An opportunity to earn a fair living and prosper? The whole harming other people tends not to come into play until one of those things is interfered with… right? But on account of the slanted examples besieged upon us by the mainstream media our view can become distorted. We can begin to see people from other countries as different from ourselves, and with this difference we are somehow able to disconnect from the pain they are suffering. ‘Well, that’s how just how it is in those countries.’

Having recently returned from some international comedy shows, including a week’s tour of Croatia, I received a gentle reminder of how we are all united by our small list of basic human needs. Croatian locals from around the country shared their plight of a corrupt government that has created an environment where any sort of start up business is virtually impossible and the chance of success based upon innovative ideas combined with hard work is not only unlikely, it is all but extinct. People expressed frustration of having to run small businesses illegally as they claimed the bureaucracy involved in being legit involved so many bribes it was impossible to foot the bill.

Obviously the actions of the Turkish government, under the rule of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, have taken things to a whole new level and the petri dish of discontent has proved fertile grounds for a full blown antidote to the suppression in the form of this burgeoning protest.

Thanks to the freedom of social media it is harder for governments to keep secrets now and if mainstream Turkish media is still boycotting coverage of the events, the world has found a darn good alternative; an instant ever-flowing vein of news, pulsating with the activity of the planet in the form of blogs, facebook statuses, and 140 characters of whatever it is you need say.

Study the photos you will see online of the people at Gezi Park… their casual clothing, the Clinique store across the street from the Starbucks, the smart phones that everyone is clutching as if it’s their own personal transponder to the world (which it is)… a warm sun forging shadows against the fleeing figures in the scene… I can’t help but feel the similarity between us, and the compassion that accompanies it.

Like many I’m sure, I feel helpless to aid these people, but in spirit I am with you, people of Gezi Park. I understand fully why you should want to keep that sanctuary alive in your concrete jungle, and I applaud you for your bravery in taking action for what you believe in.

My thoughts and prayers will remain with you and, for now, I’m signing off. I’m going to take my dog for a walk.

In a park.

Hi all,

hope you are well! This is just a quick post as I stumbled across a video and enjoyed it so much I really wanted to share it with you.

Wanted to also thank you for your patience while my series and accompanying podcast is in production. Things are going well (just slowly! Darn that production value!!) But I have some very interesting interviews coming up. Just taped one yesterday in Bexhill on Sea (South Coast of England) with an expert in crystallography. Fascinating stuff!

I promise also that I will reveal more about my own experience last year… I guess I’m just ‘weaning you in’ so that you’re not too taken aback when I get to it!

But back to the cool video! Throughout the years, when I’ve been painting my abstracts, many people have commented that they look like images from space. Here’s a couple of examples! This first one I actually titled Hubble as so many people said it made them think of outer space! It’s 36 x 60, acrylic on canvas.

And secondly, here’s Enterprise, 36 x 48, acrylic on canvas [sold].

I painted these before my appreciation of space photography began… perhaps foreshadowing it, who knows! And my interest in all things ‘Universe’ certainly skyrocketed after last year’s experience(!)

Hope you enjoy the video below as much as I did, and wishing you health and happiness until next time!

Hi. My name is Natalie Gray and I have spent my life entrenched in artistic endeavors such as fine art, design, and entertainment, with little interest in matters such as the nature of our Universe and ‘consciousness’.

Then, in February 2012, something happened to me that would change everything; an experience so out of the realm of our ordinary reality that I simply refer to it as ‘my experience’. Rather than being a stand-alone incident it began a chain of remarkable events that continue to this day.

Digging deep for research into a fantastical rabbit hole of diverse realms, from quantum physics to Shamanism and beyond, I continue to explore what happened to me, and why, and have learned that several terms describe my experience, such as Awakening, Enlightenment, Altered State, and Near Death Experience.

It has been, and is still, a remarkable journey into the truth, for, as it turns out, we are all inextricably connected on this roller coaster ride we call life on Planet Earth. Our lives are fleeting beyond belief, as are the very civilizations we are a part of. Like taking a bungee jump, we’ve come into this world to experience a quick thrill in a physical body and, as my research will indicate, we knew exactly the kind of jump we signed up for before we took the leap!

This site, and my series, Vibrate This, has been created to explore and expand the very life you’re leading now. The conversations are intended to uplift, inspire, and entertain as we meet amazing people from all walks of life, including some celebrities along the way.

Be sure to subscribe (top right), and in the meantime you are welcome to write to me via the Contact Page or leave a comment / reply below!!

Coming Soon. Welcome to Vibrate This
